About the Event

It was the death of Brahms’ mother and the desire to create a memorial to his friend, Robert Schumann, that makes this music so intensely personal. Brahms wrote, “[For the title] I would gladly give up the [word] ‘German’ and simply put ‘human.’”

In Clara Schumann’s words it is “… an immense piece that takes hold of one’s whole being like very little else, and combined with all the magic and poetry, has a wonderful, deeply moving and soothing effect.”

With its radiant messages of humanity, consolation and ‘comforting the living’, the Requiem caused a sensation and made Brahms famous, virtually overnight.

Brahms created this so-called ‘London’ version of ‘Ein Deutsches Requiem’ in 1869 as a four-hand piano version of the complete work, incorporating voice and orchestra parts. It was not, therefore, simply a reduction of the orchestral parts, but a re-imagining of the entire work.
