“…….A WELCOMING AND NOURISHING COMMUNITY…….”

For several weeks now we have been talking about the hospitality that the Cathedral is extending to our Muslim brothers and sisters by hosting an Iftar meal as they break their fast in Ramadan.

This is breaking new ground in both communities and has led to some good, honest discussion requiring mutual respect for each other’s views and needs.  There are particular considerations around the very practical details regarding food, both the buying and the cooking.

We have reached a very good way forward that meets the needs of both communities.  They will supply the chef, a list of the ingredients required and the cooking utensils for the main meal and we will pay for the food, supply salads and nibbles and be the hosts.  Wonderful!  This will ensure an anxiety free event!

So, what we are asking of the Cathedral Community is to do one or two of the following:

  • “sponsor a guest” at $10 a head.  We are expecting about 80 guests

  • make a vegetable salad which is meat, pasta, rice and cheese free (recipes available)

  • supply fresh fruit or fruit juice.

There is a sign-up sheet in the Visitors Centre for all the above.  If giving money, you can either give it to the office or place it in the baskets at the back of the Nave, labelled “Iftar.”

Our guests will break their fast with dates and a cup of tea at about 5:30pm, then have their prayers in the Undercroft and then have the meal of the day in the Visitors Centre.

Although this isn’t a shared meal it is offering a different way of putting the Cathedral Collect into action through this very practical act of hospitality.
