Scholarships

The Cathedral Music Foundation and the LCM Saunders Trust offer several scholarships to people showing talent and promise in their involvement in Cathedral Music.

The Cathedral Music Foundation was established in 1987 to award choral and organ scholarships, to appoint Alumnae, Alumni and Fellows and to support cathedral music in all its aspects. It also administers the Belinda Godfrey Organ Scholarship, and funds and administers both the Bishop Monteith Tuition Scholarships and the Peter Godfrey Choral Conducting Scholarship. The Cathedral Music School was established in 1992 to provide voice and instrumental training.

The Bishop Monteith Tuition Scholarships were established by the Cathedral Music Foundation in honour of Bishop Rae Monteith, a former Dean of the Cathedral and Assistant Bishop of Auckland, whose vision established the musical tradition, which exists today. The scholarships are offered to choir members who would benefit from additional voice training.

The Belinda Godfrey Memorial Organ Scholarship was established by Prof. Peter and the late Dr. Sheila Godfrey in memory of their daughter Belinda (1947-73). Holders over the years have included several well-known and notable organists.

The L.C.M. Saunders Choral Scholarships were established by pupils, friends and colleagues in memory of Lin Saunders (1908-95). The scholarships are advertised in all parishes, secondary schools and tertiary institutions in the Auckland Diocese in October each year. The financial rewards compensate holders to some degree for earnings forgone because of time spent in rehearsal. They help tertiary students (and others) financially, but it is intended that the principal rewards will be educational, spiritual and recreational.
