The Very Reverend Jo Kelly-Moore, BA, LLB, BD
Dean

Jo was born and raised in Wellington, with a short period of her childhood being spent in Auckland. She graduated with Law and Arts from Victoria University in 1990 and then practiced law in Wellington and London. On returning to New Zealand in 1997, Jo completed a Bachelor of Divinity degree at Bible College of New Zealand (now Laidlaw College). It was during that time that the call to ordination emerged and, after graduating, Jo spent a further year at St John’s College before being ordained Deacon in November 2000.

At that time she was appointed as Deacon Assistant at St Aidan’s Remuera, where she had been worshipping during her student year and where she remained for the next decade, becoming Priest Assistant, and then Vicar in 2004.

Jo was installed Dean of Auckland on 25 August 2010.

Jo is married to Paul and they have two sons, Adam (9) and Nathan (7). Together they enjoy spending time with family and friends, keeping up with English football, (especially Arsenal!), music and drama. Jo enjoys reading a good book, cooking, going for a good walk and she has recently discovered Zumba!

The Venerable Howard Leigh, BA, L.Th, Dip Pub Spkg
Precentor

Howard was educated at Hamilton Boy’s High School, followed by Waikato and Canterbury Universities. He studied theology at Christchurch College and St. John’s, Auckland; being ordained priest in 1971 for the Diocese of Waikato.

After periods of ministry in Stratford Parish , St. Mary’s Diocesan School, Waihi and Huntly; he moved to the Diocese of Auckland to become Vicar of Pakuranga. During this time he was also Archdeacon of Manukau. An extended sabbatical period was spent at Virginia Seminary near Washington D.C. and he later worked on a research project: ‘Experiences in Licensed Ministry’. Howard was appointed Vicar of St. Luke’s Mt Albert – Kingsland in 1993 and Archdeacon of Waitemata in 2000.

His most recent sabbatical period was spent on the staff of Southwark Cathedral in London, and he subsequently put together a resource: ‘Liturgies for Life’.

Howard has a passion for Liturgy that is grounded in the traditions of the church but can be expressed in contemporary idiom. Recreation involves time with family and friends, socializing, enjoying café culture, drama, opera, orchestral and choral music.

The Reverend Sarah Stevens, BTheol, BSc, Grad Dip Journalism, ATCL
Priest Assistant

Sarah was born and raised in St Heliers, Auckland. During her final year at Diocesan School for Girls she first sensed a call to ordained ministry. Following a gap year working in a British boarding school, Sarah studied Geography and Psychology at The University of Auckland, gaining a BSc in 2001. While at Auckland University she also completed her ATCL in Speech and Drama.

Sarah studied journalism at Auckland University of Technology in 2003 and worked as a journalist for a number of years in Auckland and Waikato. Sarah lived and worked in the senior girls boarding house at St Peter’s School in Cambridge from 2004-2006. In 2006 she could no longer ignore her sense of call to ordained ministry and entered the church’s discernment process. She returned to Auckland in 2007 to study at The College of St John the Evangelist and the University of Auckland. Sarah has completed a BTheol majoring in Biblical Studies and Practical Theology. Her theological studies have developed Sarah’s passion for scripture, social justice and pastoral care. Sarah was ordained priest in November 2010.

She enjoys walking and doing Pilates to keep fit and in her spare time she likes spending time with friends and family, traveling and going to the theatre.

Philip Smith, B.Mus, ARCM (Hons), LTCL, AWACM
Cathedral Organist & Acting Director of Music

Philip was born in Stoke-on-Trent in the English Midlands where he was a chorister in the choir of Stoke Minster and studied the organ. Following a period of study with Roger Fisher at Chester Cathedral, he became a student at The Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and later at Huddersfield University.

In 1990 he was appointed Assistant Organist at St. Asaph Cathedral in North Wales, where, as such, he played for the enthronement of the 10th Archbishop of Wales. In November 1994 Philip moved to be Organist & Director of Music at The Collegiate Church of Saint Peter in Ruthin.

Philip combined this church position with that of peripatetic organ and piano teacher at The Grange School, a large independent school in Cheshire, and was much in demand as an accompanist and conductor. He has given recitals in many cathedrals and churches including Liverpool Cathedral, Chester Cathedral, St Mary’s Cathedral Edinburgh, as well as the Alexandra Palace London and St George’s Hall Liverpool.

In 2002 he was awarded the Archbishop of Wales Award for Church Music by Dr Rowan Williams, at that time Archbishop of Wales, for services to church music in the Principality of Wales.

Philip moved to Holy Trinity Cathedral in 2008 with his black and white cat Albert.  Since then Philip has acquired another black and white cat by the name of Ethan.
