The Very Rev’d Ross Bay, BTh, PGDipTheol, GIFireE
Dean
Ross was installed as the 8th Dean of Auckland on Monday 19th November 2007, becoming the 14th Vicar of Parnell. He is also the Vicar-General of the Diocese of Auckland.
Growing up in Papatoetoe, Ross attended local schools. He worked for the Bank of New Zealand until becoming a private student at the Bible College of New Zealand in Henderson, Auckland.
The Anglican Church had been his spiritual home throughout his life, and he had found himself becoming more involved as a teenager through the local parish youth group. While at Bible College, he sensed a call to ordained ministry, entered the selection process and was accepted into the Theological College of St John the Evangelist in 1988.
He was ordained Deacon in February 1989 and served as College Deacon at St Andrew's Church, Kohimarama while completing his final year at College. He was ordained to the priesthood in November of the same year and completed a Bachelor of Theology from the Australian College of Theology in 1990.
Ross remained at St Andrew's as Priest Assistant until June 1990 taking a similar position at Holy Trinity Cathedral until 1992. He spent 18 months travelling and working in Europe,serving part-time as Priest Assistant at Limpsfield, Surrey, in the Diocese of Southwark. While there, he completed a postgraduate course at London University, gaining a Diploma in Pastoral Theology in 1993.
Returning to New Zealand, Ross became Priest Assistant at St Matthew's-in-the-City in 1994 before accepting the post of Vicar of Ellerslie/Mount Wellington in the same year. He became the Vicar of St Mark's Church, Remuera, in 2001 and was appointed Archdeacon of Auckland in 2006.
Ross married Jacquie in 1987. Jacquie is a secondary school teacher (science and biology) who holds the degree of Master of Science Education from Auckland University. She is currently Director of the Liggins Education Network for Science at The University of Auckland. Prior to that she was Head of the Science Department at Diocesan School for Girls.
For relaxation Ross plays squash and is a keen tramper. He is also a member of the Auckland Volunteer Fire Police.
The Venerable Howard Leigh, BA, L.Th, Dip Pub Spkg

Howard was educated at Hamilton Boy’s High School, followed by Waikato and Canterbury Universities. He studied theology at Christchurch College and St. John’s, Auckland; being ordained priest in 1971 for the Diocese of Waikato.
After periods of ministry in Stratford Parish , St. Mary’s Diocesan School, Waihi and Huntly; he moved to the Diocese of Auckland to become Vicar of Pakuranga. During this time he was also Archdeacon of Manukau. An extended sabbatical period was spent at Virginia Seminary near Washington D.C. and he later worked on a research project: ‘Experiences in Licensed Ministry’. Howard was appointed Vicar of St. Luke’s Mt Albert – Kingsland in 1993 and Archdeacon of Waitemata in 2000.
His most recent sabbatical period was spent on the staff of Southwark Cathedral in London, and he subsequently put together a resource: ‘Liturgies for Life’.
Howard has a passion for Liturgy that is grounded in the traditions of the church but can be expressed in contemporary idiom. Recreation involves time with family and friends, socializing, enjoying café culture, drama, opera, orchestral and choral music.
The Reverend Sarah Stevens, BSc, Grad Dip Journalism, ATCL
Deacon
Sarah was born and raised in St Heliers, Auckland. During her final year at Diocesan School for Girls she first sensed a call to ordained ministry. Following a gap year working in a British boarding school, Sarah studied Geography and Psychology at The University of Auckland, gaining a BSc in 2001. While at Auckland University she also completed her ATCL in Speech and Drama.
Sarah studied journalism at Auckland University of Technology in 2003 and worked as a journalist for a number of years in Auckland and Waikato. Sarah lived and worked in the senior girls boarding house at St Peter’s School in Cambridge from 2004-2006. In 2006 she could no longer ignore her sense of call to ordained ministry and entered the church’s discernment process. She returned to Auckland in 2007 to study at The College of St John the Evangelist and the University of Auckland. Sarah has completed a BTheol majoring in Biblical Studies and Practical Theology. Her theological studies have developed Sarah’s passion for scripture, social justice and pastoral care.
Sarah was ordained deacon in November 2009 and joined the team at Holy Trinity in December as Deacon Assistant. She enjoys walking and doing Pilates to keep fit and in her spare time she likes spending time with friends and family, traveling and going to the theatre.
Peter de Blois, B.Mus, LTCL, FASC, ARSCM
Director of Music & Events Manager
Lay Canon Born in Dunedin, Peter graduated from Victoria University of Wellington in Performance Voice. Having also trained as an organist, he has held appointments as Organ Scholar and Sub-Organist at St. Paul's Cathedral, Dunedin; Sub-Organist at Christ Church Cathedral, Christchurch and Assistant Director of Music at the Wellington Cathedral of St. Paul.
As an organist, Peter has played at St. Paul's Cathedral, London; Durham Cathedral; Ely Cathedral; York Minster; Hexham Abbey and St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. From 1992-1994 he was a Tenor Lay Clerk at Ely Cathedral in England. Whilst in the United Kingdom, he studied singing privately and was a member of the Cambridge University Chamber Choir, the Britten-Pears Chamber Choir and the early music group Musica Contexta.
Soon after returning to New Zealand in the mid-90s, Peter was appointed Director of Music at the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Wellington. Despite an obvious passion for church music, Peter did not restrict himself to that field: he spent a year as Musical Director of the Wellington Youth Choir and went on to serve as Assistant Conductor of the New Zealand National Youth Choir, the only former member ever to have done so.
As a singer, Peter has been closely involved with the early music group The Tudor Consort and the specialist vocal ensemble Baroque Voices. As a tenor soloist, Peter has performed nationally and in the UK with many choirs and orchestras in music ranging in styles from Monteverdi to Bach & Handel and 20th century composers such as Benjamin Britten, Stravinsky, Poulenc and Gareth Farr.
In 2000, Peter was appointed Director of Music at the Auckland Cathedral of The Holy Trinity. In addition to that he spent eight years as a Music Examiner for the International Examinations Board Trinity Guildhall.
In his spare time Peter is an Advisor to the RSCM, Deputy Chair of the Auckland branch, and is a Lay Canon on Holy Trinity Cathedral’s Chapter.
In recognition of his work in church music at Holy Trinity Cathedral as well as being a tutor and director of Residential RSCM Schools in New Zealand, Peter has received the honorary award of Associate of the Royal School of Church Music (ARSCM) from the Royal School of Church Music.
Philip was born in Stoke-on-Trent in the English Midlands where he was a chorister in the choir of Stoke Minster and studied the organ with Michael Rhodes. Following a period of study with Roger Fisher at Chester Cathedral, he became a student at The Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and later at Huddersfield University. Philip moved to Holy Trinity Cathedral in 2008 with his black and white cat Albert.
Kathy Heaton Brown
Children and Families Minister
Kathy has been a Cathedral parishioner for 5yrs along with her husband Richard Milne and son, Duncan. During this time she has
been a Kathedral Kids teacher working as a volunteer along with other parents in the congregation.
Kathy has now taken on the role of Children and Families Minister at the Cathedral where she will work for 10 hours per week until the end of the year. The role will involve coordinating and facilitating the” Kathedral Kids” progamme of Christian education for 0-12 yr olds each Sunday in term time and liaising with the Mainly Music pre-school programme. Kathy brings her experience as a mother, paediatric physiotherapist and
administrator to this role. She is committed to seeing the ministry of children and young people flourish at the Cathedral.
