Kathedral Kids: Stuff for Parents

Kathedral

Members of our Sunday school are known as "Kathedral Kids".

They meet each week in term time during Cathedral Eucharist at 9:30 am, and attend the first part of the service, leaving for classes after the Collect, returning to share Holy Communion.

The Kids are included in some of the service ritual: one family carries the Kathedral Kids banner in the opening procession, and one child carries an altar candle to lead the children to their rooms. After Communion the candle is returned to the altar and the children's offerings are received and blessed.

Caroline Oliver with a young group: 2001Approximately once each term we have a Kathedral Kids Big Day. The children lead the Cathedral Eucharist service as liturgist, readers, choristers, etc. We make a point of saying that this is NOT designed as a "service for children", but is the standard service of worship for our entire congregation, but run by the children.

New children, permanent or casual, are always welcome, and parents may observe classes.

Charter for Children

Our church subscribes to the "Charter for Children in the Church", which you may read through this link.

Classes

There are three classes: one for pre-schoolers, the next for readers to Year 5, and a class for children in Year 6 and above. Moves have commenced to start a group for teenagers, to meet on a weekday evening.

Sally Tibbles leads an older group - 2001The Team

Teachers are all dedicated parent volunteers, and include people from every walk of life. Clergy drop in from time to time to observe, and to participate when invited

The coordinator of the programme is Mrs Caroline Oliver.

What is Taught

The teaching programme is mostly Lectionary based, though adjusted by individual teachers to suit their particular class. Basic Christian understanding is introduced, with the aim of encouraging the children to discover, to recognise, and to apply principles and values which will last for the rest of their lives. In the process of living Christ's values on Earth they will thereby encourage others to live to the same values.

Anglican liturgical study is introduced to older children from time to time, to enable them to gain basic knowledge about Anglican forms of service.

What is Not Taught

Our teaching is not fear-based, and is neither disparaging nor negative in any way about other denominations, faiths or belief systems. We recognise our Lord as a loving God, and all people as the Children of God.

Other Activities

Throughout the Church year Kathedral Kids organise and participate in several services. The Good Friday family service is one, as is the annual "Celebration of Gifts", when the children present items of music, dance or poetry in the context of a service.

Kathedral Kids are also responsible for the Christmas Eve service, when they present their Christmas play and the congregation is asked to bring wrapped and labelled (age/gender) gifts for disadvantaged children in the community. Traditionally the Parnell Community is invited to this service. Picnics and other outings are held randomly through the year, and an annual camp is held each summer.

The Cathedral Junior Choir, known as the Choristars offers another avenue for involvement of children in Cathedralservices. Older children are also invited to train as altar servers.

Weekly Newsletter

An excellent weekly newsletter is posted or emailed to every family in the Kathedral Kids programme. It is full of information, jokes and quizzes.

Parent Get-togethers

Parents are encouraged to attend planning meetings, coffee mornings and occasional adult-only social events. These give us the opportunity to discuss future developments, to share ideas, and to get to know each other better.
