Weddings at St Mary's Church
Both outside and inside, this stunningly beautiful building deserves its ranking as the favourite place for church weddings in Auckland.
Rich dark native timbers line the walls, while the many stained glass windows glow brightly in contrast, creating a wonderful background to the spectacle of a wedding party. This church provides the most traditional of all settings available, with a central aisle between standard wooden pews offering the Bridal party the classical procession.
The church has three spaces and four configurations.
Chancel in St Mary's
Seating about 40 people, but an excellent area for fewer, guests face the aisle, and have the benefit of being very close
to the bride and groom during the ceremony held at the sanctuary rail.
St Mary's Nave
While seating up to 1000 people, the nave is suitable for much smaller numbers, by the nature of its shape. Weddings take place at the Chancel steps, below the Choir. Larger services may be catered by combining nave and chancel, holding
the ceremony at either the altar or the chancel steps.
Side Chapel in St Mary's
A small Chapel seating about 30 people is available in the body of the nave. While seldom used, it provides a guests with pews in standard rows. Entry for a small Bridal party would be non-traditional, processing up an aisle to one side of the
guests to enter close to the altar.
Music at St Mary's
The church organ was installed in 1907, and in 1985 refurbished. It has superb tone and enhances any service. The
Director of Music can arrange choir, organist, soloist(s) and other musicians.
