Weddings at St Stephen's Chapel
Tiny St Stephen's Chapel, built at St John's College and transported here in 1847 is a much loved venue for Auckland weddings.
Of perfect cruciform shape, with each arm and the central square being a square with sides of 10 feet (about 3.3 metres), it is not a very practical design for use as a wedding venue, seating about 30 people plus the wedding party, though this does not hinder its use!
The chapel is in a large park surrounded by the gravestones of many famous early settlers at the bottom of Judge Street, Parnell. While close parking is not possible, the bridal party has a delightful, historic and picturesque walk to the chapel.
At street level a tiny lych gate opens to a short, narrow path down a moderate slope which leads to the chapel, where there are excellent views down to the bay and towards the inner Waitemata Harbour.
Arriving at the chapel door the party walks the short aisle to the crossing between centre-facing pews.
The sanctuary and altar fill the arm opposite the door, and pews facing the central square occupy the side arms.
Music at St Stephen's
An electric organ, tucked away behind a screen in a side arm, provides the music for St Stephen's Chapel. A choir could be accomodated if the guest list is very small
