Marsden Chapel, dedicated to the missionaries who brought the Gospelto our country, is in the north transept opposite the Patteson Entrance. It is named for the Revd Samuel Marsden who on Christmas Day 1814 preached the first Christian sermon in this land.

A serene and tranquil place, the tiny chapel is used for small prayer groups, some weekday services, and by people who simply wish to enjoy its quiet and simple charm. It is a place to pray, to meditate, to regroup, or simply in which to relax. It is separated by glass walls from the body of the Cathedral.

Marsden Chapel Sanctuary.

The chapel is enhanced by the stark simplicity of the Sanctuary, where a simple cross on the wall, looks down on a solid kauri (agathis australis - native white pine) altar.

The five stained glass windows which adorn the external wall were made by English artist John Baker, now long retired, who in 2001 stated that he considered them to be the culmination of his life work.

The ceilings of the chapel are of kauri and tawa timber - both indigenous to New Zealand.
