Paul Tarling ATCL, DipABRSM
Belinda Godfrey Organ Scholar: 2007 -
Paul came to Holy Trinity Cathedral from Nelson, where he was organ scholar and later assistant organist at Christ Church Cathedral, and studied with Kemp English and John Wesley Barker. He is now studying organ performance with Dr. John Wells as part of a conjoint BMus/BA at the University of Auckland.
Paul gained his ATCL diploma in solo piano in 2003, and passed the DipABRSM with distinction in piano performance in 2005. He has given organ recitals in Nelson at All Saints’ Church and Christ Church Cathedral, at St. Paul’s Cathedral Wellington and at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Wanganui. He has accompanied performances of the Fauré and Duruflé requiems with the Nelson Civic Choir and the Bach B minor mass with Sir David Willcocks. He was assistant accompanist for the 2007 RSCM summer school directed by Dr. Stephen Darlington.
As assistant organist at Nelson Cathedral, Paul has played for the Trafalgar 200 commemoration service attended by the Prime Minister and Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu, the dedication of the west-end windows in the presence of His Royal Highness the Duke of York, and the installation of the 10th Bishop of Nelson.
In addition to his musical studies, Paul has achieved high academic success as a student at Nelson College. He represented New Zealand at the 2004 Future Problem Solving International Conference in Lexington, Kentucky, and was a member of the Nelson College team that won the Reserve Bank of New Zealand monetary policy challenge in 2005. He attended the 2006 Genesis Science Forum in Auckland, and was a member of the Nelson College team that placed second in the 2004 New Zealand School’s Geography Competition. In 2006 he was awarded a University of Auckland scholarship.
