The Cathedra of the Bishop of AucklandBishop's Throne

"Cathedra" means seat - particularly that of a teacher or authority figure. It is the root of the word Cathedral.

The full title for such a church is "Cathedral Church", i.e. the "Church of (containing) the Cathedra", but this is not in common use except for churches which are used as interim cathedrals. St Mary's was called the Cathedral Church from 1887 to 1973, after which the Bishop's Throne was moved into Holy Trinity.

The throne of the Bishop of Auckland is on the left side of the Chancel, and has a carved replica of the Diocesan crest below the canopy.

The Bishop's Pastoral Staff, in the shape of a shepherd's crook, rests in its stand. The staff symbolises the Bishop as pastor (shepherd) who tends the flock, and with Christ, the Good Shepherd.

In front of the Cathedra is a Chaplain's stall. An equally imposing seat on the right of the Chancel, opposite the Bishop's Throne, is the Dean's stall.
