Baptism By baptism a person is brought to Jesus Christ, and made a member of Christ's Church. In their new life, they are accepted and sealed by God with the Holy Spirit to represent Christ to the world.
It is one of the two Sacraments instituted by Jesus Christ, the other being Holy Communion. Baptism of children is an accepted part of the Anglican Church in New Zealand, and at this Cathedral.
Baptism is required for those wishing to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion. The Church recognises baptisms performed in other churches and denominations, because baptism is a declaration of relationship in Christ, not with a particular church or denomination in Christendom.
Requirements for Children Baptised
Parents and godparents of children baptised have responsibility for teaching the child several things, defined in A New Zealand Prayer Book. These and other matters will be discussed when the arrangement is being made for the baptism.
The Baptismal Service
The service takes place when the Church meets for worship. This may be at the Eucharist for parishioners, or a date will be set for several baptisms to take place together during a morning service arranged for the purpose.
Confirmation and Renewal of Faith The Church teaches that baptism cannot be repeated in a person's life. There are services available for those who wish to affirm or renew their commitment: Laying on of Hands for Confirmation and Renewal.
People who doubt that they have been baptised may have Conditional Baptism, which includes the full baptismal liturgy and the pouring of water over the candidate.
