Directors of Music

Throughout our history the Cathedral has been blessed with particularly fine musicians as Directors of Music.

Professor Peter Godfrey was our first Director of Music, appointed to St Mary’s Cathedral Church in 1958 and Holy Trinity Cathedral when it opened in 1973. He instituted the very high musical standard which continues today.

Anthony Jennings succeeded Peter in 1974, followed in 1986 by James Tibbles. Robert Costin was Interim Director for part of 1995 when Indra Hughes became Organist and Director of Music.

From 1998 James Tibbles and Peter Watts served as successive Acting Directors until the appointment in 2000 of Peter de Blois, our present Director of Music.

During the century before the establishment of the position of Director of Music, a number of eminent musicians held the position of Organist/Choirmaster. Click here to see the list.
