James Tibbles is a familiar face around the Cathedral. His association began in 1976, when he became the first recipient of the Belinda Godfrey Memorial Organ Scholarship. After completing his M.Mus in organ and harpsichord under Anthony Jennings at the University of Auckland he travelled to Holland for two years post-graduate study at the Royal Conservatory under Professor Bob van Asperen. On his return to NZ he was appointed Director of Music at the Cathedral, a position he held until 1983.
James is Senior Lecturer in Early Music Performance/ Performance Practice and Head of Baroque Studies in the School of Music at The University of Auckland. One of New Zealand’s leading players of historic keyboards (harpsichord, fortepiano and organ), he has an active performing career as a soloist, accompanist and conductor. He is Artistic Director of the Age of Discovery and a member of the baroque chamber ensemble Extempore.
James is also Assistant Musical Director of TOWER NZ Youth Choir and Voices New Zealand, a National Artist for Radio New Zealand and is on the international panel of examiners for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.
His most recent recording project is a CD on the Atoll label of the historic Avery organ in Ponsonby Baptist Church – NZ’s first CD of an 18th century organ. The recording is available at top retail outlets, or from the Age of Discovery.
